We’re honored to share insights from Sunne Justice, co-founder of Burt’s Bees and a pioneer in the natural beauty movement. With decades of experience, she brings deep wisdom about what truly nourishes skin - focusing on simplicity, intention, and working with your body.
Before clean beauty became widely embraced, Sunne was instrumental in raising industry standards and shifting public perception.
Here are a few hard-earned insights from her decades of impact:
1. Treat Your Skin Like the Living Organ It Is
Your skin isn’t just a surface, it’s your body’s largest organ. It breathes, absorbs, and responds to what you feed it.
Try this: Place a garlic slice on your wrist and cover it. Within hours, you’ll have garlic breath - that’s how deeply your skin absorbs what you apply.
Sunne’s rule: If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.

2. Follow a Simple, Intentional Routine
Healthy skin doesn’t require a 10-step routine. It needs consistency, nourishment, and care. Cleanse, exfoliate, tone and nourish, and moisturize. Each step supports your skin’s natural function and enhances its ability to absorb nutrients and glow.
Sunne’s tip: Apply moisturizer on damp skin to boost absorption and reduce the amount you need.
Her favorite: Repair Crème Concentrate

3. Exfoliate, Gently
Skin naturally sheds every 28 days. Without regular exfoliation, dead cells build up and cause dullness.
Sunne’s tip: For face, exfoliate 2–3 times a week (daily for resilient skin). For body, dry brush or use a scrub daily.
“You don’t need to scrub hard — just sweep away what’s dead so your skin can breathe and glow.”
Her favorite: Honey Bamboo Scrub

4. Customize Daily
Your skin’s needs shift with the seasons, stress, and hormones. Some days it craves more oil; other days, a lighter touch. Mix your cream with water or mist to create a lotion-like texture that meets your skin where it is.

5. Care for the Forgotten Zones
Areas like under your eyes, lips, neck, and the backs of your hands have no oil glands, so they age faster and need extra care.
“Always include these areas in your routine. Be gentle. Use upward strokes. Don’t help gravity.”
